What is it?

Three 300ml bottles for someone choosing sake for the first time: a junmai and a junmai daiginjo from Akari Shuzo in Iga, Mie, plus a sparkling from Hoshinami Shuzo in Niigata, arranged in the order that makes the differences obvious. Includes a bilingual tasting card. 12–15.5% ABV.

Good for

  • A gift for someone who has never had sake
  • Explaining Japanese drinking to a friend abroad
  • People living alone, for whom a full bottle is too much
  • Anyone who wants to run a tasting at their own table

What does it taste like?

  • First, Awaboshi: green apple and a fine bead, openly sweet (SMV −30)
  • Second, Hibiakari: rice and chestnut, leaning dry (SMV +4), and it can be warmed
  • Third, Hatsuakari: pear and white blossom, the aromatic daiginjo
  • 900ml in total: two evenings for two people, one evening for four

How do you drink it?

  • 01

Chill all three for three hours before you start

  • 02

Awaboshi, then Hibiakari, then Hatsuakari. Reverse the order and the sparkling tastes watery

  • 03

One glass is fine for all three; a sip of water between them resets your palate

  • 04

With Hibiakari, warm the second glass to 45°C and compare it against the first

  • 05

After opening: finish the sparkling that day, the other two within a week

The maker

About the maker

Sake feels hard because people try to learn the category names first. Junmai, ginjo, daiginjo: those describe how it was made, not how it tastes.

From the person who chose it

The card inside gives a serving temperature and a food match for each, in Japanese and English. Every match is something you can buy at a convenience store: edamame, cheese, fried chicken.

Can it be sent as a gift?

The opened gift box showing three small bottles and a tasting card

A paper box that holds the three bottles side by side, with the bilingual tasting card tucked in. Made to be given as it is; noshi paper, wrapping and a message card are free.

Noshi is the paper slip that traditionally accompanies a gift in Japan. Outer noshi goes over the wrapping, so the occasion is visible at a glance. Inner noshi goes under it, for a more understated gift, and is the usual choice for anything shipped.

Questions

Where in Japan can you deliver this?
Anywhere in Japan. Shipping is ¥990 (ambient delivery) and takes 2–4 business days after dispatch.
Can you deliver to my hotel while I am in Japan?
Yes. Give us the name on your booking and your check-in date and we aim to arrive the day before you do. The rate is the same ¥990 as any Japanese address.
Can you ship this abroad?
Shipping alcohol out of Japan needs an export licence for liquor wholesalers, which we are still obtaining. Until then we cannot send it abroad.
Can I swap what is in the box?
Within the same price band and the same 300ml format, yes. Note your request at checkout. If stock does not allow it we will email you before shipping.
How long does it keep?
Six months refrigerated for the sparkling, twelve months ambient for the other two. Both are printed on the card.
Can someone under 20 receive it?
No. Japanese law restricts buying and receiving alcohol to people aged 20 or over, and we verify age both at checkout and on delivery. For international orders, the destination country's legal drinking age applies.
