Ochugen is a midsummer greeting to the people who have looked after you. In Tokyo it lands in the first half of July, in Osaka from mid-July to 15 August; later than that and the inscription changes to a plain summer greeting. The noshi reads 御中元 and the cord is a bow, because this is a greeting you are glad to repeat every year. Chilled items travel separately; ambient ones can go to a hotel or an office. You can choose the delivery date at checkout, and no invoice goes in the box.
